St. Bartholomew Academy follows the recommended curricula of the Archdiocese of Newark in all subject areas and meets the New Jersey state curriculum standards. Each subject is taught along a coordinated continuum of skills and content areas.

Grades Pre-K thru 5 are self-contained classes.  The Pre-K and Kindergarten are full-day programs that include Religion, Language, Math, Computer Literacy, Music, Art, Health and Safety, Physical Education and Foreign Language.  The Pre-Kindergarten program features a literacy initiative to develop phonological awareness, oral language, letter and word recognition, enhanced vocabulary, and reading readiness.   Learning centers are used to foster collaborative learning, listening skills, role-playing, and sharing.  

In Grades K – 5, major academic areas are taught by the homeroom teacher. Students receive instruction from subject area specialists once per week in Art, Music, Library Science, Physical Education, Computer and Foreign Language.  

Grades 6 thru 8 are departmentalized.  Faculty specialists in Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies instruct Grades 6-8.  In addition, students receive weekly instruction from subject area specialists once per week in Art, Music, Library Science, Gym, Computer and Foreign Language.

The Accelerated Mathematics program in grades 6-8 offers qualified students the opportunity to receive accelerated math instruction that meets their needs for advancement.  Grade 6 Mathematics include arithmetic and beginning pre-algebra skills. Pre-Algebra is taught in Grade 7 and Grade 8 offers Algebra I.

Daily religious education is supplemented with classroom liturgies, a Day of Prayer, First Friday masses, and a special assemblies/speaker’s program.   

Students in Grades 6 – 8 who have an interest in Technology may participate in the Technology Intern (TI) program.   Supervised by the Assistant Principal for Educational Development, the technology interns learn about maintaining and upgrading the academy’s technology and serve the academy community by volunteering hours to assisting the Academy faculty by troubleshooting problems encountered with the Academy’s myriad equipment.  This program is part of the Stewardship and Service component of the Academy’s Leadership and Character Development Program.  

A very competent Child Study Team, a Basic Skills teacher, a speech therapist and nursing services are provided by Union County Educational Service to support our faculty team.  The Basic Skills teacher provides compensatory education and supplemental instruction for students who qualify.
